This work is a characteristic example of the final period of Santiago Rusiñol’s pictorial work when it focused on gardens and well-ordered parks. It constitutes a more confined view of the countryside than the best examples of the genre, which are usually more extensive, and therefore more distant. Here Rusiñol places himself almost inside the subject, which does not prevent him from taking pleasure in depicting the regular positioning of the trees that are the main feature of the composition and dealing with them in the most symmetrical way possible, without thereby renouncing his eminently realistic approach. The work is undated but on account of its subject matter could be placed in the period between 1898 and 1931, the year of the painter’s death. It is very difficult to give it an exact date, although its style inclines me to believe that it is from the first half of the twenties.
