On 1 May 1919, the Hungarian Soviet Republic celebrated the “first free Mayday” with processions and the erection of monumental sculptures and installations. This was the first mass event in Budapest to be recorded in moving pictures. This Vörös Riportfilm (Red Report Film) of the marching crowds was clearly made using several cameras simultaneously. One, a Pathé hand-cranked camera, was operated by the photographer and cameraman Károly Escher (1890–1966).
