This pattern consists of 4x4 azulejo modules and is somewhat paradoxical: whilst at the outset it fit into the category of the simpler solutions devised in the Lisbon workshops, those in which the 4x4 module was made up of only two different elements, it does form a sophisticated, highly dynamic and very decorative composition. Composed of ropes and ferroneries in the Mannerist taste, it had two versions: this polychrome one and one in blue on white (MNAz, Inv. 3773 Az). Both can be admired in situ at the Convent of Christ in Tomar. Santos Simões recorded that the blue on white version is widespread there, totalling 27500 azulejos, applied as ashlars in the "transept corridors". Nevertheless, these patterns are relatively rare, although the polychrome version can be viewed at Quinta da Penha Verde in Sintra, where it lines the Fonte do Corvo (Raven’s Fountain), dated as having been applied in 1651.
