Guatemala, Guatemala

Hand embroidered with different stitches, including satin and chain stitch. Base textile woven on backstrap loom, with all the edges finished on the loom. It was dyed green, indigo and yellow-orange with natural dyes, and with red commercial alizarin (aniline) dye. Such texile format is used frequently in the communitites of the South Coast. The embroidery is an impressive piece of work, executed entirely with silk thread. This piece combines floral, zoo-and anthropomorphic figures in dense embroidery work.
