Wooden pectoral cross, showing on the front and back fourteen oval boxes in rock crystal in which the relics are kept. The cross sits upon an trapezoidal base (probably added later), which has inlays of mother-of-pearl decorated with floral motifs engraved in black. In the centre, one can see a miniature parchment representing St. Veronica.

  • Production: In the Near East the production of works with applications of mother-of-pearl was abundant, as souvenirs from the Holy Land. The iconography of pieces with such origin is related the Order of Saint Francis namely the symbols of the Cross of the Holy Sepulchre, which is justified by Saint Francis of Assisi’s pilgrimage to Jerusalem, moved by the need to worship and follow the example of Christ in his home land. Through this Religious Order it was possible to keep the connection between the Catholic Church and Jerusalem, which brought about a multiplication of pieces like these.
