With its Byzantine-style vaulting in red and cream brick, and chequered floors, the Crystal Palace subway, vestibule, terrace and stairs, provided an elaborate pedestrian passageway. Erected in 1865 to designs by architect Charles Barry Junior, it transported visitors beneath Crystal Palace Parade and provided a dramatic entrance to the Crystal Palace exhibition building.
The subway was originally listed Grade II in 1972 and was upgraded to II* in 2018.
