First commemorative public monument in Brazil, it was erected on the initiative of D. Pedro II in honor of the 40th anniversary of Brazil's independence proclaimed by his father. The project of brazilian artist João Maximiano Mafra was executed in Paris by the renowned sculptor Louis Rochet. On a wide pedestal in gneiss, surrounded by fence, cast iron intercalated with lamps, stands the monumental equestrian statue in bronze of the first Brazilian emperor extending his right hand in the Constitution. (1798-1834)
