Observation from the road to Kirk Michael: 'During the season [Peel] port is the rendezvous for fishing sloops from every quarter. As many as three hundred will at times bring their nightly 'take' to this market. The appearance of this little flotilla in the morning sun is truly lovely.' (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, 1863, M 02321)

A pencil sketch from the sketchbook of Mary Elinor Wilson who went on tour to Switzerland and Norway with Alice Temple Chevalier in 1854. She was the daughter of Temple Chevalier, Vicar of Esh near Durham & professor of Astronomy and Hebrew at Durham University. One of his daughters married Stuart Pears, afterwards H.M. of Repton. Temple Chevalier was 3rd Wrangler and helped J.M.W. during vacations from Cambridge by giving him a sound grounding in Astronomy. (A.T.W. 12.05.1927 from conversation with J.M.Wilson.)
