On this copy of an etching, the Egidienkirche is still under scaffolding. But the new Pellerhaus by Fritz and Walter Mayer already seems to be finished. This part of town, which became an elegant neighborhood in the 18th century with villas of rich merchants and numerous artists, was almost completely destroyed on January 2, 1945. The new buildings from the 1950s have repeatedly been caught in a critical crossfire. It is still an open question whether the façade of the New Pellerhaus embodies the spirit of modernism and the postwar era, or instead is an example of an architectural failure. The building's future still remains a matter of controversy.
