Pelourinho is a great example of sixteenth century architecture in the New World. Yet as the city of Salvador held the first slave market in the Americas from 1558, the square was the place where slaves were punished in public. Though nowadays it represents the positive influence of the African heritage in Bahia, its history is a sad reminder of the slavery that brought the African population to Brazil.
