Pendant Plaque

1490 - 1500

Museo Poldi Pezzoli

Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

Two are the scenes depicted on the plaque. On one side a mother of pearl Pietà, on the other a painted enamels Resurrection. In the background of the Deposition are shown objects and symbolic moments related to Christ’s Passion. Around the Resurrection scene there is a Latin sentence pronounced by the Angel in Mark Gospel: “Resurrexit Dominus all(eluj)a sicut dixit vobis all(eluj)a” (God resurrected alleluia, as he told you, alleluia) . The iconography therefore invited the worshipper to meditate upon Christ Passion and, afterwards, turning the plaque, upon his triumph. Even though its high quality this object, made to be wore hanging from a chain or a ribbon, it had more a devotional value than a decorative one.
