Music played an important role in shamanistic rituals in pre-Colombian America, both at funerals and during religious ceremonies. Panpipes, trumpets and shells were popular instruments. Some figurines also served as small flutes. Percussion instruments, such as rattles and drums, produced a sweeping rhythm.
