Religious pendants were widely worn in Catholic Spain. They were often acquired as souvenirs at the numerous pilgrimage sites, and were used as amulets against all the dangers of daily life as much as aids to prayer.

This pendant has an image of the Virgin of Montserrat on one side and St Teresa of Avila on the other. The celebrated statue of the Black Madonna in the Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery was one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Catalonia.
