Penelope

Antoine Bourdelle1912

Shimane Art Museum
Matsue-shi, Shimane-ken , Japan

This is a statue of Penelope, the wife of the hero Odysseus from the ancient Greek epic "The Odyssey." The form of Penelope waiting impatiently for her husband, whose letters from the battlefield have ceased, was created using the wife of Bourdelle, the artist, as the model. While it has a theme of pathos, this work demonstrates a meditative atmosphere. It possesses a curve that continues from the torso to the lower back and flows down the legs, completing an elegant work of art.
