Penu (Coral pounder)

Penu. Stone pounder. This penu (pounder) has been worked and smoothed from dark basalt ofa'i (stone). The shaft of the penu is cylindrical in shape though flares out sharply at the circular base, which has a pounding surface that is convex and visibly chipped at the edge. The grip end of the penu is topped with a cross bar that is triangular in section.
