Though paired in the Museum's exhibit, these two skeletons were found at different times, in different locations, by different paleontologists. One was excavated by paleontologist E.D. Cope's hired collectors in South Dakota in 1882. The second was discovered by the Museum's fossil hunter Barnum Brown during a series of expeditions to the Hell Creek region in Montana between 1902 and 1908, the same period when Brown discovered two specimens of Tyrannosaurus rex.
