White paisley motifs, filled with roses and lilies as a sign of love and purity, form the remarkable pattern of these braces. The embroidered canvas strip is framed by smooth tan leather and lined with cream-coloured chamois leather. A cream-coloured silk ribbon protects the edges. The original leather fasteners have been preserved. The buttonhole flaps, trimmed at both ends with chamois leather, are used for affixing to the waistband. Braces for men became fashionable with the arrival of long trousers, or so-called pantaloons. Self-embroidered, they were a popular gift from young brides to their future husbands. The romantic flower pattern was deliberately chosen as symbol fitting commitment.
