This is the first computer made by IBM, which uses a microprocessor as the heart of the machine. It enjoys extraordinary success, from then on in becomes the compulsory reference point for the development of new machines. IBM chooses to call it ‘personal computer’ to highlight how it is centred around the user’s needs rather than the machine’s. Historically the expression ‘personal computer’ was born a few years earlier, in connection with Apple II.
