In 1997, Pete Sampras won his fourth Wimbledon title over Cedric Pioline in three sets, 6–4, 6–2, 6–4. At the end of this dominating year, Sampras was 10-1 against top ten opponents and undefeated in eight singles finals. He held the No. 1 ranking for the entire year and joined Jimmy Connors as the only male player to hold the year-end No. 1 ranking for five consecutive years.
