On a trip west in the 1950s, then New York artists Fred and Eileen Whitaker visited friends and fellow artists, Peter Hurd and his wife Henriette Wyeth, at their home in Hurd’s native New Mexico. Eileen placed Peter, standing, and a seated Henriette on their rustic patio. Henriette, known for her portraits, is the daughter of artist/illustrator N.C. Wyeth with whom Hurd studied. The Whitakers and Hurds enjoyed membership in numerous art societies, including the National Academy of Design. Eileen sketched and took a photograph, then painted this remembrance in her studio.
