Washington, D.C., United States

Louis Schade and his family lived in the Petersen House until 1893. He turned the Lincoln death room into a playroom for his children and used the building as an office for his newspaper, The Washington Sentinel. Although initially unmarked, tourists continuously visited and asked to see the room where Lincoln died. A marble tablet was added in 1883 identifying the building as the “House in which Abraham Lincoln died.”
