The island of Hawaii has the greatest number of Hawaiian petroglyphs usually carved into smooth *pahoehoe* lava. Many of the carvings depict stylized stick figures, warriors, animals and claw-sailed canoes. This image shows some of the petroglyphs at Puu Loa, just off the Chain of Craters road which leads from Kilauea's main caldera to the south-eastern Puna coast of the island where the lava flows enter the sea.
