Pewter jug

16th century

Tallinn City Museum

Tallinn City Museum
Tallinn, Estonia

The 16th century jug has lost both its lid and handle and is heavily dented. The jug is decorated with a rich engraved renaissance plant ornament and the figure of a horseman with a lance in a circle. It has bullet-shaped legs embellished with angel heads. This initially very sumptuous jug is the only clearly renaissance-styled object in our collection. The alloy used for casting the jug contains a surprisingly large amount, nearly a third, of lead that was cheaper than tin. This may suggest that it is a 16th century copy of a more expensive jug.
