Percy Bysshe Shelley and his second wife, Mary; George Gordon, Lord Byron; and Byron_s friend, Dr. John Polidori were at a house party in June 1816 at the Villa Diodati near Geneva. The group had hoped

for warm weather, but a volcano had erupted in the East Indies and a cold darkness settled over Europe. The friends decided to compose a ghost story. After listening to her husband and Byron discuss theories

about the electric basis of life and the reanimation of corpses, Mary had a powerful vision. Her imaginings led to _Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus,__ which was first published in three volumes in 1818. The story is literal and philosophical and writers, historians, philosophers, filmmakers, and the toy industry, among others continue to interpret the text two hundred years after publication. Contemporary feminists believe it presents Mary_s anxiety over a man_s desire to abandon womankind and find a new method of procreation (Percy was known to be an overambitious and emotional philosopher intrigued by medical marvels). Others suggest that it reflects on a human_s encounter with the living and dead. Frankenstein is horrified by the result of his work, yet he had hoped it would be beautiful. The novel begs readers to consider "how far is too far?" For many years, children had access to few monster-related merchandise, but since the late 1940, Frankenstein_s monster has appeared in a number toys and games.
