HELP YOURSELF SHOE-REPAIRERS D/HT Appreciating that footwear repair costs are becoming altogether too high for many people, Jim Clennell (60) and Fred Smith (40) who run a repair shop at Seven Kings, Essex, have began a new service. They have installed five lasts and sets of tools and invite customers to come and do their own mending. They estimate what the full cost of the job would be, and charge 2d in the shilling for use of the equipment. They sell the customer the leather at wholesale price and the result is that the job costs one third less. Jim and Fred give their advice free and charge 6d extra for professional finishing if required. They remain open until 9 pm, and are planning a special ladies night, since so many women do their repairs at home. PHOTO SHOWS: Jim Clennell supervises Miss Audrey Newham as she trims the leather round the sole of her shoe which she is mending herself. FOX PHOTOS 462637 25th March, 1952 INDUSTRY - BOOT & SHOE
