Token, copper, 29mm diameter. Nottingham halfpenny, 1792. (DH Notts 8). Issuer Donald & Co., 1792, ½d. Obverse ‘Donald & Co. Stocking manufacturers wholesale & retail. Promissory halfpenny payable at Nottingmor’. Reverse Beehive surrounded by bees: ‘No 29 Bull Street Birmingham, 1792’. Notes This company made stockings in Birmingham and Nottingham, the latter being second only to Leicester in importance in this industry. The significance of the bees is not known but they may be meant to indicate industry. At least one modern wool spinner uses the symbol of the beehive.
