The Victoria and Albert Museum
London, United Kingdom

Two costume studies of a grey-white mantle embroidered in red and gold with a cross at the shoulder, suggesting a religious or military order such the Knights Templar. This work is part of an album of fifty-three sketches by Carlevarijs which includes figures he appears to have painted in the open air in preparation for insertion into formal compositions. A figure wearing this costume appears for example in two of Carlevarijs' paintings of the Piazetta in Venice, both now in private collections.
