Kyiv, Ukraine

Phalerae in the form of a hemisphere with a side bent at a right angle. The surface is decorated with a floral ornament, at the base of which is a rosette – "Segner wheel" with leaves of laurel and acanthus branching from it to the sides.
Such phalerae served as decorations for a horse's bridle, decorating the crossing of its straps. Bulakhiv phalerae come from so-called "strange" complex of the early Sarmatian period – a kind of treasure that was usually placed on the slopes of mounds or natural hills. They could fulfill role of peculiar sanctuaries, which were created by the Sarmatians as they advanced westward. It is known that in ancient societies conquest and subjugation of new territories always began with a certain magical ritual.
