The poet Philip Larkin (1922-1985) lived in Hull for over thirty years and worked as librarian at the university library. Unveiled in 2010, the bronze statue depicts Larkin, hat in hand, heading for a train. The statue is inspired by the opening line of one of Larkin's most famous poems, 'The Whitsun Weddings', which opens with 'That Whitsun, I was late getting away'.
