Philipp Melanchthon (1497─1560) was one of Martin Luther's most important supporters. He maintained a lively dialogue with Caritas Pirckheimer and shared many of her theological views. As a mediator between the council and the abbess Caritas, he strongly condemned all acts of violence against St Clare's Monastery. Melanchthon accused the council, the preachers and the monastery caretaker Kaspar Nützel that their actions had done more harm than good to the Reformation.
