Born a coal miner's daughter in 1934 in a Kentucky shack and married at 13, Loretta Lynn beat the odds to become one of country music's most beloved performers. Recording and performing almost continuously since 1960, Lynn produced 55 albums, 21 compilations, and 14 Top Ten country hits. A side career with duo partner Conway Twitty produced 12 more Top Ten country hits. Released in 1974, Greatest Hits, Volume II includes a number of those Top Tens: "Coal Miner's Daughter," "Your Squaw is on the Warpath," and "Love is the Foundation." Lynn's honest, sometimes autobiographical songs about hard times, shaky marriages, and sick children struck a chord with middle-class American women dealing with similar issues. Still, even some of her most devoted fans agree that sometimes it's better to "stand up to your man" than "stand by" him.
