Together with José Marinho he was one of the main disciples of Leonardo Coimbra's teaching at the Faculty of Letters of Porto, being considered the founder of the group of «Portuguese philosophy», where António Quadros, Afonso Botelho and António Braz Teixeira also participated. His philosophical initiation had started in the second decade of the 20th century, both at the headquarters of the «Portuguese Renaissance», as well as in famous gatherings in Porto cafés.
