London, United Kingdom

This diamond ring belonged to Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, a member of the Tax Resistance League. The motto of the League was ‘No Vote No Tax’ and, as a protest against their unfranchised status, members consistently resisted the payment of taxes. In 1910 this ring was seized by bailiffs in lieu of Sophia's refusal to pay rates. The ring was subsequently bought at auction by a fellow member of the Tax Resistance League and returned to her.
