Current entrance to the cave of Altamira in its previous state, prior to the archeological investigations outside of the cave that were carried out from 2008. The first access door was installed by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola following the cave’s discovery. Throughout the twentieth century, the entrance underwent a series of alterations to make it suitable for visits by the public. The ground near the entrance point was leveled and the first door was replaced by others that were more suitable for the preservation of the cave. The current door was installed in 2007.
