Remote control toys, especially vehicles, are very popular playthings. Early examples employed various methods, including puffs of air from a squeezable bulb, to control the steering mechanism of a wind-up toy. Toy helicopters employed cranked cables to spin the blades, and later battery power allowed further developments. Radio-controlled (R.C.) toys didn't appear until the 1950s, although the technology was developed during World War II. Over time enhancements, such as the development of transistors and digital technology, make radio-controlled toys both inexpensive and more complex. Two radio-controlled race cars, as in this photograph, allow for competitive fun. Gentlemen, press the button and start your engines!
