A family near Rochester, New York inherited a coin-operated elephant kiddie ride from their grandparents. The family believes that the ride was originally used at Ontario Beach Park, the former site of an amusement park in the Charlotte neighborhood. The park thrived in the late 19th century as a typical end-of-the trolley line amusement area and was once called "The Coney Island of Western New York." By 1919 many of the original rides and attractions had burned and, aided by the rise of the automobile, the area was changed to a city park and greenspace. The single remaining ride, a Dentzel carousel, remains and was restored in the 1980s. The elephant ride dates from the mid-twentieth century. Perhaps it generated revenue for a retail outlet or restaurant in the area.
