In July, 1953 a group of children posed for an Associated Press photographer in Detroit, Michigan. Although the photograph may have been staged, it certainly looks as if the children are playing a real game of Monopoly. Some are smiling, others deep in thought. They appear to be playing on the front step at the doorway to a home--commonly known as the stoop. You can even see a doormat, with Monopoly money stored on it--just to the right of the actual game board. The photograph helps document Monopoly's popularity, just under twenty years after its introduction.
