Kohrs had close friendships with several of his foremen, including Tom Hooban. Tom met the newlywed Kohrs at the Missouri River steamboat terminus at Fort Benton, and drove the couple to Augusta’s new home. He joined the family in Philadelphia for the nation’s 1876 Centennial celebration. When Hooban died of tuberculosis in New Mexico in 1884, Kohrs paid to have his remains shipped back to his family in Wisconsin.
