Hopscotch and similar variants with different names are played all over the world and in many different countries and cultures. All involve marking the "board" with lines drawn or incised, and hopping in a pattern on them. The game appeared in print in the English-speaking world during the 17th century. Recent innovations include specifically-marketed sidewalk chalk as well as pre-printed hopscotch "boards" on vinyl or fabric.
