Cabinet card photographs came into wide use for portraiture after 1870. Their popularity lasted until about 1900, when public desire matched the availability of the Kodak Brownie camera, and amateur indoor and outdoor photography, much less formal, became widely available to many more people. Before this time, studio photographers provided the public with most of their photographic images.
