  • Photographic Subject(s): Nirupa Roy was a Hindi film actress who despite her early leading roles and her work in mythologicals in the 1950s, is particularly remembered for playing the quintessential Indian mother during the 1970s and 1980s. In a career spanning over 5 decades, she completed over 275 films, and was referred to as the 'queen of misery' in Hindi film circles, due to her frequent portrayal of the impoverished, suffering mother that she began to be considered the embodiment of — particularly referenced (and remembered in popular culture) through the 1975 Deewar. Roy received four Filmfare awards in the course of her career, including the Lifetime Acheviement in 2004.
