Savkari Pash (1925) was based on a short novel by Narayan Hari Apte and told the story of a young farmer who is caught in a debt trap by the village money-lender – a story which struck a chord in every Indian heart because of its true-to- life situations and realistic handling. The film anticipated Italian Neorealist style of filmmaking.
