The 19th-century card game whist evolves into several variants called bridge by the early 20th century. Harold Vanderbilt adds complexity to the contract—when players bid on how many tricks (hands) they can win—in 1925. Vanderbilt’s “contract bridge” becomes synonymous with bridge itself.
