A piano and bench elegantly upholstered with delicate and detailed crochet covers that excite a kinetic, psychedelic effect. Unlike the crocheted doilies that once decorated and protected the furniture here, Joana Vasconcelos’ intervention lends this tradition a whole new dimension. The crochet becomes a second skin, a protective interface that in no way hinders the functionality of the piano and bench. The use of such a traditionally female technique to protect, adorn and totally sheath a musical instrument asserts this encounter between tradition and an at once popular and erudite contemporaneity.
