Piano

Zumpe was born in 1726 at Fürth near Nuremberg. He worked in London for the harpsichord maker Burkat Shudi and by 1761 had set up his own business. He invented the square piano sometime before 1766 and was one of the first piano makers to achieve international renown. Zumpe’s instruments were extremely popular in France, and were exported as far afield as Italy and Russia.
