First published in 1903 with the subtitle: "Książeczka leśna" ["Forest Book"], Konopnicka's story is actually a free adaptation of Elsa Beskow's "Puttes Eventyr" with her own illustrations. The Polish version has been reprinted many times, and has become one of Konopnicka's most recognisable works. This particular copy dates from 1925, published by Gebethner & Wolff, printed by W. L. Anczyc & Co. in Cracow. It bears a stamp with the inscription: "Dyrekcya pensyi w Krakowie – Egzemplarz obowiązkowy. Nakład 6200 egzemplarzy dnia 11.01.1925" and annotation: "Składy główne: The polish book importing Co. Inc.
