Snack in Ocongate, in front of the Ausangate snow-capped peak

In this image, Chambi captures the moment of rest and refreshment of a large group of campesinos (all in ponchos and chullos) on a slope in the Ocongate area, from which there is a splendid view of Ausangate, the highest mountain in southern Peru, at an impressive 6384 m above sea level. Not far from Cuzco, on its summit the climate is such that there is perennial snow (which does not turn to ice, hence the term 'nevado', or snowfield).
Comparison with another photograph by Chambi, 'Pilgrims to Qoyllurit'i', which appears to have been taken on the same occasion from a different position (with a much wider field, which includes the view offered by this photograph) makes it clear that the snack in question is a moment in the pilgrimage to the Qoyllurit'i sanctuary, a celebration of pre-Hispanic origin and re-interpreted in a Christian key, which is very much felt throughout the region. The entire procession is very long and involves crossing several passes and pausing at specific points. The one immortalised by Chambi is perhaps the one with the most spectacular view.
