With a ferrule wrapped in black cloth embellished with green fringe, this umbrella has 32 bamboo ribs and a yellow-foundation green-edge canopy ornamented with motifs of birds and Chinese magnolia blossoms, along with a Chinese inscription reading “abundant wealth comes to Meinong when Chinese magnolia flowers start to bloom, midsummer of the year of Yi Chou (乙丑年)”. As a carrier of the Hakka people’s affection to their hometown thousands of miles away, this hand-made oil-paper umbrella is the epitome of the Hakkas’ traditional mission of endowing handicrafts with cultural significance.
