Picture Scroll Depicting Perry Expedition （Scene 1）

On January 16, 1854 (near the end of the Edo Period) Perry fleet visited the coast of Kanagawa (Yokohama City, Japan) to open Japan to foreign trade from the United States of America.　This picture scroll depicts the situation of the equipment for war vessel and U. S. forces of the Perry fleet in detail.　On this scene, the military uniforms and weapons are drawn that Perry and others were equipped.　We can understand what Japanese people of the Edo period recognized to be a big menace militarily from the detailed expression of this picture.
