This piece of tree is part of the Historical Relics collection. This length of wood is said to have been taken from an oak tree planted by Governor Gawler, the second Governor of the Colony, in Elder Park in1838. It symbolises the ways in which European settlers shaped the landscape of the colony.
This length of wood was presented to the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1929 by Miss T. Watson and was transferred to the History Trust of South Australia in 1984.
